House of Fisher are proud to support and promote climate stripes, a powerful way of conveying how climate change and rising temperatures are affecting our planet.
The climate stripes graphic was created in Reading (home of House of Fisher headquarters) by climate science professor Ed Hawkins from the renowned University of Reading. No words. No numbers. No graphs. Just a series of vertical coloured bars, showing the progressive heating of our planet in a single, striking image.
How do the Climate Stripes work?
According to the University of Reading, ‘Each stripe on the graphic represents the average temperature for a year, relative to the average temperature over the period as a whole. Shades of blue indicate cooler-than-average years, while red shows years that were hotter than average. The stark band of deep red stripes on the right-hand side of the graphic shows the rapid heating of our planet in recent decades.’.
The stripes can be personalised based on specific location data, with over 200 versions available. Stripes images for countries, states and cities are available to download for free from the showyourstripes website.
Worldwide support for awareness and action
The use of climate stripes to create awareness gathers additional momentum every day. From source, Reading is seeing a huge uptake of climate stripes, with their inclusion on buses and on the arms of football shirts for both the male and female teams this 2022/23 Championship season. It also featured on the large screen at Reading Festival 2022 on occasions, one of the biggest music festivals in the UK, with over 105,000 attendees.
The creation of over 200 personalised versions of the climate stripes has helped the awareness spread further afield and makes it a subject for discussion on national news in many countries.
How House of Fisher is taking action against climate change
At House of Fisher, sustainability is at the forefront of our thinking. We are driving change within our sector. This was recognised earlier this year when we achieved an ECOsmart 2022 certified serviced apartment award from Greengage.
Within our sector we have been trailblazers for positive change and continue to do so. Whilst we are not where we want to be yet, we have a clear plan and vision for sustainability and continue to make positive steps, not just empty promises.
Further details can be found on our dedicated sustainability page. As an open company that values the feedback of our guests and partners, we recently conducted research and asked for opinions to aid our sustainability journey. The results of this research can be found here.
