When staying at House of Fisher in Reading here are the seven things we recommend you must do:
1 . Check out Banksy’s street art
Inspired by Oscar Wilde, who famously stayed at Reading Prison as part of his two year imprisonment between 1895 and 1897, Banksy produced an exceptional piece of street art at Reading in 2021. During this stay Oscar Wilde wrote his final published work ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’, highlighting the inhumanity of the penitentiary system during Victorian times and the need for reform.
Be sure to see Banksy’s work for yourself and explore the many examples of culture available throughout the town of Reading.
2.Visit Abbey Ruins
Abbey Ruins celebrates 900 years of history on 21st June 2021, giving you so much to explore and discover. This heritage site is within the former grounds of Reading Abbey, which was previously one of Europe’s largest royal monasteries.
In 2018 Abbey Ruins was reopened, following a £3.15m project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England. The Quarter includes Reading Museum, the Town Hall, Reading Gaol, St. James’ Church, St Laurence’s Church, the Forbury Gardens, and the remains of Reading Abbey. The Abbey Ruins and Gateway are both Grade I listed buildings and Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
3. Grab Wendy’s burger!
Wendy’s left our shores in 1999. After over 20 years they have returned to the UK and their first restaurant to open was in Reading on 2nd June 2021! Wendy’s overtook Burger King to become America’s second most popular fast food outlet and now it is ready to hit the UK hard with its range of mouthwatering burgers!
4. Have a picnic at Forbury Gardens
Everyone loves a picnic and there is no better way to enjoy the sunshine than with nibbles and drinks. Forbury Gardens is a breathtaking park and idyllic spot for a picnic, kept wonderfully and with plenty of gardens for children to run around. It is in the heart of Reading and very easily accessible.
5. Take a train to explore local attractions
Reading boasts one of the UK’s best train stations, with top facilities and excellent transportation links.
Reading is even listed on the new TFL underground map, demonstrating how close and convenient it is to travel in and out of London and explore the numerous options our capital city has to offer. You can also head West, travelling to the historic city of Bath and crossing the border to Wales!
Whatever you decide, be sure to hop on the train and explore further.
6. Visit Wellington Country Park
Visiting Wellington Park is an attractive proposition for all ages but especially children! The beautiful country park displays nature at its finest and children will never be bored due to the park’s animal farm, miniature railway, jumping pillow, splash zone, indoor soft play, welly wheels, mini golf and adventure play.
7. Take a river cruise down the Thames
Reading benefits from the River Thames running through it. At 215 miles, the River Thames is the longest river entirely in England and the second-longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn.
Why not take a cruise via a river trip from Thames Rivercruise? They depart frequently from Caversham Pier with a range of lengths and options onboard. You can enjoy the beautiful views whilst sipping drinks, enjoying afternoon tea or eating a Sunday roast dinner! The boat includes catering options and a manned bar to enhance the experience further.
At House of Fisher the #HOFfamily loved the rivercruise, where we celebrated our summer party in 2019.
