On 6th February 2022, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. This is the first time in history that a monarch has achieved the extraordinary milestone of 70 years of service to the nation.
To commemorate this landmark royal occasion, the UK has seen a change to the usual May Day bank holiday, to coincide with a series of nationwide events celebrating our Monarch. June 2nd to 5th 2022 is the Jubilee Weekend. It is a special long weekend with two Bank Holiday days and starts on Thursday 2nd June, which was the date of The Queen’s Coronation back in 1953.
Over this special extended bank holiday weekend, a very special series of events are planned near our House of Fisher serviced apartments, that give an opportunity for people and communities to come together to mark this historic milestone.
Whether you fancy a family day out to a public event or community activity, or a relaxing meal with your friends and family, the Thames Valley area has so much to enjoy when celebrating this unprecedented anniversary.
Windsor and Maidenhead
Our amazing apartments are ideally located to enjoy great family days out, including the many memorable events planned in and around Windsor in celebration of HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Beacon Lighting and Fireworks –
Following the UK’s long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons, the Platinum Jubilee weekend in Windsor will commence with the lighting of the Windsor beacon, as part of the National Beacon lighting. This will take place on the Long Walk as darkness falls. People are invited up to the Beacon site where there will be music and excitement. The lighting will be followed by a wonderful firework display which can be best viewed from the Long Walk.
For the first time, beacons will also be lit in each of the capital cities of the Commonwealth countries to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Jubilee Picnic in the Park
The Jubilee Picnic in the Park on the Long Walk, Windsor will take place on Saturday 4th June, with reflections across the 7 decades from 1952, featuring cars from the years of The Queen’s reign. This fun-packed afternoon will include activities featuring cars and music from the 7 Decades of The Queen’s reign. There will be a variety of musical performances throughout the afternoon and evening from local bands, groups and individual performers.
Gather friends and family and bring your union jack flags to gather around our giant screens so you can enjoy watching the national Platinum Party at the Palace, staged by the BBC that will bring together some of the world’s biggest entertainment stars to celebrate the most significant and joyous moments from The Queen’s seven decade reign.
Everyone in the local community is invited to join in the fun and celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in style, this event is entirely free – no tickets required!
Windsor’s Big Lunch – The Long Table
The weekend will finish on the Long Walk with the Big Lunch on Sunday 5th June. Since The Big Lunch launched in 2009, every year it has encouraged communities to celebrate their connections and to get to know each other a little bit better, coming together in the spirit of fun and friendship.
Whilst there will be a number of tables available for reservation on the Long Walk, guests are encouraged to bring your own picnic rug to join in the celebration, fun and atmosphere around the big screens in place which allow you to enjoy watching the national Platinum Pageant, which promises to be a spectacular parade, combining street art, theatre, circus, music, carnival and costume.
